A day in the life:

As Legal Counsel in the Business Development department of Mota-Engil Engenharia E Construção África, S.A., I focus on shaping infrastructure projects across Africa. I work closely with local advisors to navigate the unique business landscapes of each market that we operate in, negotiating concession and project agreements with government entities. I also engage with financiers to structure the project’s financial documentation. My daily responsibilities involve providing legal guidance to our department and negotiating contracts with third-party service providers. It’s a dynamic role that allows me to contribute to impactful projects that transform communities, and I am proud to be part of Mota-Engil’s legacy of excellence.

The best thing about my current job is:

The most challenging thing about my current job is:

The most challenging thing about my current job is staying on top of the ever-evolving legal developments in different jurisdictions. Each market has its own complexities, but navigating these challenges also helps me identify key similarities across regions, enabling me to provide more strategic and informed legal advice. It’s a constant learning process that ultimately strengthens my ability to support our projects effectively.

Most pivotal career decision:

Moving in-house after a 6-year stint at one of Kenya’s top law firms. This transition provided me with in-depth exposure to infrastructure projects and direct interaction with key stakeholders, significantly enhancing my career.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve had to face in your in-house career journey is:

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my in-house career journey was transitioning from being a lawyer in a law firm to working as in-house counsel. Initially, I was accustomed to drafting lengthy legal opinions, complete with detailed case law and statutory references. However, I had to adapt to a more business-focused approach, where the priority is providing clear, concise advice. Ultimately, my role is to guide the business on the most efficient and legally compliant path forward.

What advice would I give my younger self?

Everything is working out in your favour so relax and enjoy the ride.

Key influencers that have shaped my journey:

I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors who’ve shaped my path. A pivotal moment was after high school when I accompanied my mother to a site visit to her client- Mr. Francis Okomo Okello,a leader in corporate governance in Kenya. He noticed my curiosity when I was snooping through his bookshelf and remarked that I had “lawyer written all over me”. His words meant a lot, coming from someone I held in high regard with an illustrious career. He has since mentored my legal journey through campus to date.

My former boss, Mr. Richard Omwela, pushed me to take on challenges, even when I wasn’t sure of myself and I forever remain indebted to him for that confidence he instilled in me. Above all, my mother has been my hero and role model, inspiring my journey. Lastly, the vibrant resilience of the African people motivates me to contribute to the continent’s development.

One cool thing I’ve observed in the legal industry recently ?

The increasing number of women holding high positions. It’s empowering to see more women breaking barriers and leading in what was once a heavily male-dominated field.

Favourite pro bono/ volunteer or charitable activity:

Providing civic education on legal matters within the infrastructure industry.

If I were not practising law, I would probably be:

An owner of a bookshop with a café that also sells house plants

What (singular) achievement are you most proud of?

Running 7 half marathons!

Something you love doing that but you’re not that great at?

Dancing.

Something you dislike doing that you’re pretty good at? Organising group trips.

In 5 years-time I’d love to be:

A leading infrastructure professional in Africa, influencing change, shaping policy, and contributing to transformative projects that drive sustainable development across the continent.
